SMCROSXRY2: Help

SMCROSXRY2 - ROSAT PSPC Catalog of SMC X-Ray Sources (Haberl et al)

Overview

This is a catalogue of 517 discrete X-ray sources in a 6 degree by 6 degree field covering the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The catalogue was derived from the pointed ROSAT PSPC observations performed between October 1991 and May 1994 and is complementary to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) catalogue published by Haberl & Pietsch (1999, A&AS, 139, 277). The authors followed the same identification scheme and used, among other information, X-ray hardness ratios and spatial extent to classify unknown sources as candidates for active galactic nuclei (AGN), foreground stars, supernova remnants (SNRs), supersoft sources (SSSs) and X-ray binaries. In Table 7 of the paper from which this catalog is taken (Haberl et al. 2000, A&AS, 142, 41), for 158 of these 517 sources a likely source type is given, from which 46 sources are suggested as background AGN (including candidates resulting from a comparison of X-ray and radio images). Nearly all of the X-ray binaries known in the SMC were detected in the ROSAT PSPC observations; most of them with luminosities below 10^36 erg/s, suggesting that the fraction of high-luminosity X-ray binary systems in the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) is not significantly larger than in our galaxy.

Provenance

This database was created at the HEASARC in June 2000 based on the ADC/CDS Catalog J/A+AS/142/41, and is derived from Table 2 of the reference.

Parameters

Name
The source identification recommended by the CDS Dictionary of Nomenclature of Celestial Objects, where the HEASARC has prefixed the running number given in the original computer-readable table with the acronym 'HFP2000'.

RA
The right ascension of the X-ray source in the specified equinox. In the original table the RA was given in equinox 2000 and with a precision of 0.1 seconds of time.

Dec
The declination of the X-ray source in the specified equinox. In the original table this was given in equinox 2000 and with a precision of 1 arcsecond.

LII
The galactic longitude.

BII
The galactic latitude.

Detect_Likelihood
The likelihood of existence (the maximum value from the five detection energy bands).

Exposure
The vignetting-corrected net exposure time in seconds.

Error_Radius
The statistical (90% confidence) error in the X-ray position, with an additional systematic uncertainty of about 7 arcsec, in arcsec.

Count_Rate
The PSPC 0.1-2.4 keV count rate, in counts per second.

Count_Rate_Error
The error in the count rate.

Hardness_Ratio_1
The hardness ratio HR1, defined as HR1 = (H-S)/(H+S), where S and H are the count rates in the 0.1-0.4 keV and 0.5-2.0 keV bands, respectively. This is not calculated in cases where not all of the required count rates are available.

Hardness_Ratio_1_Error
The error in the hardness ratio HR1 (hardness_ratio_1).

Hardness_Ratio_2
The hardness ratio HR2, defined as HR2 = (H2-H1)/(H1+H2), where H1 and H2 are the count rates in the 0.5-0.9 keV and 0.9-2.0 keV bands, respectively. This is not calculated in cases where not all of the required count rates are available.

Hardness_Ratio_2_Error
The error in the hardness ratio HR2 (hardness_ratio_2).

Source_Extent
The X-ray source extent derived from the same detection as for the source position, in arcsec.

Extent_Likelihood
The likelihood for the extent.

ROR
The ROSAT observation identifier, where a '+' at the end of the parameter indicates merged observations.

Offaxis
The Off-axis angle of the X-ray source, in arcmin.

Ribdist
The distance to the detector window support structure or the detector rim, in units of the FWHM of the instrument resolution at the position of the X-ray source in the detector.

Kpf99
The number of the nearest (within 60 arcsec) source in the Kahabka et al. 1999 Catalog (A&AS, 136, 81) [HEASARC Catalog SMCROSXRAY].

Remarks
Remarks about the X-ray source.
