2MASS Catalog: Catalog Help
2MASS uses two new, highly automated 1.3-m telescopes, one at Mt. Hopkins, Arizona, and one at CTIO, Chile. Each telescope is equipped with a three-channel camera, each channel consisting of a 256x256 array of HgCdTe detectors, capable of observing the sky simultaneously at J (1.25 microns), H (1.65 microns) and Ks (2.17 microns).
The northern 2MASS facility began routine operations in 1997 June, and the southern facility in 1998 March. The 2MASS All-Sky Data Release was published in 2003 March.
2MASS All-Sky Data ReleaseThe catalogue provided by BLASTA is the 2MASS All-Sky Data Release Point Source Catalog, released by IPAC on 2003 March 25. The release covers 99.998% of the sky observed from both the northern 2MASS facility at Mt. Hopkins, AZ, and the southern 2MASS facility at Cerro Tololo, Chile. The release data products include 4,121,439 Atlas Images (compressed, 512 x 1024 pixel2, 1"/pixel) in the three survey bands, derived from the 59,731 scans of the 8.5' × 6° Survey Tiles, and Catalogs containing positional and photometric information for 470,992,970 Point sources and 1,647,599 Extended sources.
The 2MASS All-Sky Catalogs and Atlas are the result of a full reprocessing of all Survey data following the completion of observatory operations. This final processing enabled all data to be run through a single, stable pipeline system that incorporated knowledge gained over the course of the Survey about the telescopes and cameras, the atmosphere and the near infrared sky. The final processing made use of the best, uniform instrumental, photometric and astrometric calibrations derived using all of the Survey data, and the best astrometric reference catalog (Tycho 2) that was not available earlier. Owing to these improvements, the All-Sky Catalogs and Atlas are superior products and supersede the incremental data release products. The full-resolution Atlas images are expected to be available online at IPAC around 2003 September.
