Flares observed during 1987 and 1988

The Hard X-ray Burst Spectrometer (HXRBS) on board the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) observed a large number solar flares and other sources of X-ray radiation. A list of all events during 1987 and 1988 can be found in the file $XAOBS/flare_all.list. This file contains all events without excluding known non-solar events as some of these may still be of interest to scientists analysing Ginga data. An additional file, $XAOBS/flare_large.list, contains a list of large solar flares (with peak count rates greater than 500 counts sec-1) seen by the HXRBS during 1987 and 1988.

If a flare is observed in the cleaned data cube or time series, and is not due to background variations, then the user is recommended to consult these lists in order to identify known solar flares.
