Converting spectral files to OGIP FITS formatIt is expected that most users will wish to analyse their data using the xspec spectral fitting package, which is part of the XANADU suite of software. The Ginga spectral files have to be converted into files following the OGIP FITS conventions (Arnaud, George & Tennant 1995) using the program ginga2xsp. The following is an example of its use:
qcl>ginga2xsp
** GINGA2XSP Version 2.1 Mon Aug 11 17:32:35 1997 **
GNG_DATIN Ginga spectral file to convert =mkn335_91a.phad
GNG_IDMX Ginga matrix file to convert = $XADMX/low.idmx =
TIME PHA DET
1 X 48 X 2 = 96 CUBE elements
Opening file: mkn335_91a_top.pha
Opening file: mkn335_91a_mid.pha
Opening file: mkn335_91a_top.rsp
Opening file: mkn335_91a_mid.rsp
qcl>
The response matrix $XADMX/low.idmx contains information regarding the top- and mid-layers of each individual LAC detector and is appropriate for observations taken when the high voltage was operated at ~1830 V. For observations taken during periods when the high voltage was reduced to ~1745 V, the user must use the $XADMX/special.idmx response matrix. Output spectral files are given the suffix ".pha" whilst the output response matrices are given the suffix ".rsp". If the input data file has a time axis, i.e. a data cube, then the user can choose to have an output spectrum for each time bin or sum up to N contiguous non-zero time bins into each spectrum. Note that any remaining time bins are ignored and that the program ginga2xsp writes all the extracted spectra one output file. The following is an example of its use when a time axis is present:
