Next: Background to Chandra Up: The Leicester Database and Previous: Analysis software
The Chandra Data ArchiveThe Chandra X-ray Observatory is the U.S. follow-on to the Einstein Observatory. Chandra was formerly known as AXAF, the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility, but was renamed by NASA in December, 1998. It was launched on 23 July 1999 by the Space Shuttle Colombia. The UK Chandra Data Archive is the latest archive to be introduced at LEDAS. It will also rapidly become the largest, as over 150 GB of data is expected to be ingested into the archive per year of operation of the satellite. The UK Chandra archive is a collaborative project between the LEDAS and the Chandra X-ray Center (CXC) in the Center for Astrophysics at Harvard, MA. The CXC is the host for the original Chandra public data archive, as part of its remit to provide support for the science community to realise the potential of Chandra. The LEDAS mirrors (from CXC) the Chandra web pages, proposal preparation tools, analysis software and science data archive to provide a fast, reliable and free service to UK (and European) users.
