ROSAT was the primary X-ray observatory for the 1990s. Launched on June 1st
1990, it was switched off on 12 February 1999, having completed over 10,000
observations in its lifetime.
ROSAT operated in the extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray bands providing,
for the first time, high-quality spectral, timing and spatial information
on many tens of thousands of astronomical objects.
The ROSAT Public Data Archive held at LEDAS contains all data which has been
released to the public domain from the pointed observation phase of the
mission.
Copies of the ROSAT public archive are also maintained in archive centres in
the two other nations participating in the project. The US and German
X-ray data archives have been set up at the High Energy Astrophysics
Science Archive Research Center (HEASARC) sited at Goddard Space Flight
Centre (GSFC), and at the ROSAT Science Data Centre located at the Max
Planck Institut für Extraterrestrische Physik (MPE),
Garching. The German archive centre for extreme ultraviolet data is
located at the University of Tübingen.
