Binary Distribution of the HEASOFT Software

The binary distribution consists of precompiled HEAsoft software which can be run almost as soon as they are downloaded (some assembly is required). First select which computer system you are using and then which subpackages you want to download.

STEP 1 - Select your system:

Linux (PC) Linux (Mac) IRIX

Solaris 2.6-2.8 (SunOS 5.6-5.8) Solaris 2.9 (SunOS 5.9) OSF

Mac OS X 10.2.x (Jaguar) Mac OS X 10.3.x (Panther) Cygwin (see Important Note)

FTOOLS 4.2 for Windows
SunOS 4 and HPUX 10 support has been dropped.

STEP 2 - Download the desired packages:

A - For Swift data analysis:

- Contains the Swift v1.1 software and all of HEASOFT 5.3.1 (includes the complete FTOOLS, XANADU, & XSTAR) (80-210 Mb). For more information, see the Swift 1.1 Release Notes.

B - For all other data analysis (not including Swift), select any of the following 4 HEASOFT packages:

1. FTOOLS - General FITS utilities plus mission-specific tools for RXTE, ASCA, ROSAT, and older satellites

FTOOLS (complete) (50-180 Mb) - General & Mission-Specific Ftools and FV.
Does not contain XANADU or XSTAR.
Click HERE if you only want the FV GUI.

FTOOLS (General Utility FTools only) (30-90 Mb) - Common, Image, Calibration, & HEASARC tools

2. HEATOOLS - New package of general FITS utilities

HEATOOLS (BETA) (more info) (<5 Mb)

3. XANADU - Multi-mission programs for imaging, timing, and spectral analysis of astronomical X-ray data

XANADU (more info) (30-40 Mb) - XIMAGE, XSPEC and XRONOS
Requires Xspec Data (below)

Xspec Data Files:
Xspec data (134 Mb) - Required for Xspec
Xspec NEI APEC data (18 Mb) - Needed only by users running APEC NEI models

Individual XANADU Packages:
Ximage - image analysis (more info)
Xronos - timing analysis (more info)
Xspec - spectral analysis (more info)

4. XSTAR - Calculates physical conditions and emission spectra of photoionized gases

XSTAR (complete) (more info) (~15 Mb)

STEP 3 - Install the software:

Un-gzip and untar all the downloaded packages from the same root directory, then follow the instructions in the appropriate install document to complete the installation of the software (these files are also included in the downloads):

If you downloaded the SWIFT package, see: INSTALL-SWIFT.BIN
If you downloaded the HEATOOLS package along with any other packages, see: INSTALL-HEA.BINARY
Otherwise, see INSTALL.BINARY

MD5 CHECKSUMS: To check the integrity of any of the files you downloaded above, run the (Unix) command "md5sum -c" on the appropriate .md5 file below.
